Abstract

Purpose: This meta-analysis was done to identify the effectiveness of prophylactic dressings to prevent pressure injury in healthcare facilities.

Methods: The search strategy was designed to retrieve studies published in English across PubMed, CINAHL, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials as well as in Korean across KMbase, KoreaMed, KISS, RISS, and NDSL between 2010 and 2020. All adult participants were 18 years or over. Inclusion criteria were randomized or non-randomized controlled trials. Two independent reviewers conducted quality assessments of the included studies by the RoB or RoBANS 2.0. A Review Manager 5.4.1 was used to analyze effect sizes based on intention-to-treat analysis and to identify possible sources of heterogeneity among the studies.

Results: Overall, the ten studies were judged to be of moderate quality due to visibility of the intervention, blinding was rare. All studies were included in the meta-analysis (total n=2689) and demonstrated homogeneity (I2=0%). Meta-analysis revealed an overall effect in favour of the intervention (RR=0.19, 95% CI 0.13~0.28).

Conclusions: The meta-analysis provides high evidence of the effectiveness of a prophylactic dressing to prevent pressure injury, with an overall relative risk indicating that the intervention decreases pressure injury risk by 81%.
